Alfa Romeo flat 4. Gearbox is in the right place, the cylinders are pointing the right way, but it sounds great and it is reliable and it is watercooled. Make the watercooled 911 from before they were cool!

Or a Subaru Boxer. More reliable, sounds better, and cheaper/broader aftermarket.

I think it will mount to the VW box, or you could use a Porsche box.
